This Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Speculators

To celebrate the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store stocked with special items. Enthusiasts will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the institution's theme. For collectors, though, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. The store will operate both the physical location to its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

Pokécology That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited volume packed with beautiful artwork that show creatures in their wild environments. It's essentially like the kind of research an in-world scientist could produce once trainers provide field notes, or a naturalist's journal might have created if the famous islands teemed with flying-types instead of birds. A key appeal lies in the book's serious treatment, treating Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Promo Card Stand Out

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company to release promos for big events or brand collaborations. A lot of these promotional cards often feature the famous mouse Pokémon who serves as the series face. What distinguishes this new promotion apart is its unusually large size. While exact measurements have not been publicly disclosed, availability will certainly be strictly limited, and fans able to get only a single card per purchase.

Curbing Speculator Activity

Per an official statement, a portion of the merchandise will also be sold beyond the museum walls. But, a wider release will only be select retailers within the United Kingdom. Critically, collectors cannot purchase the card via the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they're going to have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. If you're unable to attend, there is an alternative like fossil-themed display coming to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases made in the Museum shop and its web shop, including these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the efforts of 400 scientists dedicated to scientific inquiry and finding answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement says.
