Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
