During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
