In the wake of a crucial victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has significantly closed the gap in the championship standings. He is now positioned just twelve points behind leader Lando Norris and in front of teammate his McLaren rival, everything is in place for a nail-biting three-way title decider at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen's Qatar win was not at all predictable. While he delivered a masterful drive for Red Bull, the result was significantly impacted by a controversial strategic call from the Woking-based team. Opting to stay on track during an early safety car period, the team presented the initiative to their rival, who capitalized impeccably.
"I'm looking forward to it, I'm eager to go there and fight for it," he stated. "I go in there with just optimism. I try everything I can but simultaneously, should I fall short, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This philosophy he claims removes much of the stress. The aim for the last race is simple: to maximize each opportunity from himself and the car.
The incredible part of this late-season charge truly astonishing is the distance he has come back. Following the Zandvoort round in August, he was an enormous over a century of points behind the championship leader Oscar Piastri and had openly dismissed his championship hopes.
The turnaround began with substantial car developments introduced by his team at the Italian Grand Prix. Changes to the car's floor and front wing rectified persistent handling problems, allowing Verstappen to feel comfortable with the chassis once more.
Following those upgrades, the results has been nothing short of dominant, securing a quintet of triumphs and multiple podiums. He was quick to praise the collective effort behind this resurgence.
"We have triumphed where maybe it seemed unlikely, through the right call as a team," Verstappen added. "The partnership with my engineer, GP and the whole team... we are really well integrated."
Ahead of the arrive in Abu Dhabi, the championship picture is crystal clear.
The intensity now shifts on the papaya-colored cars, who have watched a comfortable advantage slip away due to unfortunate events, including a twin DSQ in Las Vegas. From his perspective, the situation allows for fearlessness, turning the ultimate Grand Prix into a straight opportunity to attack with nothing to lose.
