The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit series reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.

“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
