Significant Disruption Projected: Britain's Most Severe Climate Crisis Outcomes Unveiled by Experts

The gravest potential impacts of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by scientists, encompassing a scorching 4C increase in average temperatures to a 2-metre surge in ocean levels. An alternative projection foresees a decline of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and power requirements.

Plausible Extremes, Not Forecasts

These consequences, a number of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are seen as improbable but credible. The researchers said that these models addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had left the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The severe weather events we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," said the lead researcher who led the research. "The nation has been planning lacking the frameworks to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to prepare for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but dare not dismiss."

A Range of Extreme Weather Projections

Another collection of dire projections sets out the possible scale of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that thermometer readings could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while rainfall could be triple standard measurements.

The probability of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what action will be enacted to tackle climate change and how the planet's climate will respond. This research was likened to national security risk assessments or stress tests for financial systems.

Major Scenario Details

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Planetary heating soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts breaks down or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon basin dying release its vast reserves of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
  • AMOC Shutdown: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A collapse beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," explained the lead researcher.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica disintegrate quickly, inundating low-lying areas. Differing from the other scenarios, this threat is already known by infrastructure experts.
  • Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from industrial activity scatter sunlight from warming the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Worst

The severe models could be used to inform the development of long-term infrastructure, including expanded cities, nuclear power stations and urban drainage systems. Awareness of these environmental threats could also accelerate the transition to cut carbon pollution.

The research developed the severe projections using a blend of observed and historical experience, climate models and climate physics. The scenarios exclude potential global problems such as the agricultural collapse and resource wars.

This work was commissioned as part of a official risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have warned that too little consideration was being allocated to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

Official experts has stated that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the risks for 4C. Past policy documents have been labeled being "very weak" by certain experts.

A government spokesperson said: "Climate change is at the center of this government’s agenda, both adapting for the future and transitioning to a renewable energy leader. It is essential that the UK is ready for the impacts."
