New Year Partygoers Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK

Forecasters are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the weather service.

Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are forecast to be cold, making warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Readings Forecast to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Warnings Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
