Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
