A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country struggling with rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Officials stated the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by three individuals, with one began shooting at him before escaping on foot.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, according to authorities.
Police said that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a location near the Carlton Centre.
He had spent several hours at the property supervising the setup of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, as per local media.
"Authorities believe the victim was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," an official report stated.
CCTV footage reportedly captured a individual with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries across the street.
It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the incident.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the scene.
Authorities have requested members of the public who may have have information to contact them.
"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been following their trail to establish their destination," added an official.
His sister, a close relative, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am in shock. I don't have words," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were ready to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the citizens to not sharing explicit content from the scene, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, especially for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that was broadcast on a South African broadcasting platform.
Beyond his role as a presenter, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including security provision, offering high-level security services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in building administration and participated in property reclaimations.
His killing has caused national trauma and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and political parties.
A senior figure said he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's murder.
"He expressed his views fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my decisions as a minister. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," he stated.
A public representative commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director said that "DJ Warras was not merely a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a true devotee of sound and a kind-hearted individual who brought joy and energy to every performance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."
In a communication, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, warmth and sharp wit, adding that his legacy "will endure".
